Can I apply for family reunification with my sister?
Question: Hi! I’m a Ghanaian lady with an Italian fiancée and we have a baby. Can I invite my sister from Ghana to come and live with us? If yes, how do I go about it? Thanks.
Answer: The most simply way of bringing your sister to Italy is through tourism visa. Your sister must go to the Italian Embassy/Consulate in your home country and apply for a tourist visa, by presenting all the required documents.
Once she enters Italy with this visa and comes to live in the same house with the Italian nephew, she can apply for the Permit of Stay for family reasons.
Article 19 of the Italian Immigration Law (Testo unico sull'immigrazione) says that foreigners who are living with their Italian relatives up to the 4th grade cannot be expelled from the country. They have a right to be issued the Permit of Stay for family reasons.
You can apply for this Permit of Stay directly at the local police station (Questura) by submitting the documents showing the family relationship and your living together. Thanks.
