All efforts should be made to support the difficult process of integration of young immigrant women in Italy, President of the Republic of Italy Giorgio Napolitano has said.
In a speech to mark International Women's Day, the President said dedication to education and work, civil commitment, solidarity and respect for law are fundamental values of the country.
He urged all immigrants to share in these values because they’ll be Italians of tomorrow.
President Napolitano’s thoughts went to women and girls suffering in different parts of the world. He said that as we think about how to improve the conditions of Italian women, we can’t forget the suffering women are subjected to in other parts of the world, including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), inadequate food and medical care, lack of access to education, extreme forms of discrimination against women, etc.
He criticized female infanticide (the deliberate killing of girl babies) and female foeticide (the selective abortion of girls in the womb) saying they eliminate millions of future women. President Napolitano said there was need of fighting against these practices which deny girls the right to be born and to survive.
