The award giving ceremony will be held in Rome on 23rd June
A video competition has been organised to highlight positive integration of immigrants in Italy. The competition titled “New citizens: Stories of ordinary integration” has been organised by Circolo di Roma di Libertà e Giustizia in collaboration with ARCIPELAGO - Festival Internazionale di Cortometraggi e Nuove Immagini, under the patronage of the Province of Rome.
The competition is open to professional and amateur filmmakers, ordinary citizens, students, members of associations and voluntary organizations, etc who would like to use a short video to narrate the numerous stories of immigrants who have succeeded to integrate into the Italian society.
The competition is open to all regardless of age, profession, nationality, and there is no enrolment fee to be paid.
It is enough to shoot a 10 minute video, which can be a documentary, a short fiction or animated cartoon, telling the story of successful integration.
The video must be in Italian language, and can be a story about a domestic worker, shop owner, factory worker, etc.
The organisers are keen to highlight these stories of good integration, of honest migrants who are the majority but whom we hardly hear about in media reports.
The organisers of the competition say that there are more than 4,3 million immigrants in Italy and their number is destined to grow in the coming years. Many of these men and woman, and unaccompanied children, come to Italy to seek asylum. They are escaping from wars, persecutions, natural disasters, poverty, dictatorship, etc. They usually come to Italy to begin a new life, starting from scratch, far away from their families, homes, dear ones, everything they had before.
They usually live at the margins of the society, silently, concentrating on their work, but without rights. They bring with them immense knowledge and experiences which enrich the lives of those who have a chance of meeting and getting to know them.
Mr. Massimo Marnetto, Coordinator of Circolo di Roma di Libertà e Giustizia, says that video is a powerful tool that can be used to help the public have a better understanding of immigrants and integration.
The videos must be submitted by 16th April 2010 to the organizers.
The best three videos will be screened during the award giving ceremony in Rome at the Cinema Multisala Instrastevere, on 23rd June 2010.
